The first day of spring is March 19, and with thoughts of spring often come thoughts of spring cleaning. According to an article in Country Living there are many possible origins for the idea of spring cleaning. One dates all the way back to the Passover when before the start of the holiday, a general cleaning took place in order to remove any yeast bread, or chametz, from the home. Whatever its origins, it has become something many people do all over the world—it is a time to purge oneself of things you no longer need and thoroughly clean your home, preparing for warmer weather.
There can be many forms of spring cleaning. It can be a literal full cleaning of one’s home, or it can be something more personal. You can also do a spring cleaning of your insurance to make sure that your coverage is adequate, that you don’t have any coverage that is no longer needed, and to take into account any changes in your life that might affect your policies.
In a past article, we discussed doing an annual checkup of your insurance to make sure that your coverage has kept up with inflation or any environmental changes that might have happened in your area. “Annual checkups are a great opportunity to review your insurance with a licensed professional and make sure there aren’t any gaps in your coverage,” says Marcus Mahling, Regional Sales Manager for Mennonite Aid Plan/Mennonite Insurance Services. “As construction material costs continue to increase, it’s always a great idea to make sure your property is insured to value. If you haven’t reviewed your coverage in a couple of years, now is the time.”
According to Jerry Linscheid, Mennonite Aid Plan’s General Manager and CEO, they send out an insurance renewal review form to their clients every year. “At Mennonite Aid Plan, we work at keeping the coverage adequate through regular updates.”
The form includes questions such as:
- Have you made any changes to your property over the past year?
- Have you purchased any items that might require additional protection, such as jewelry, collectibles, musical equipment, etc.
- Are you operating a business out of your home?
- Did you purchase a second home or rental?
- Is there any other insurance coverage you might be interested in purchasing?
There are so many things to consider when doing your insurance spring cleaning that it is best to speak to your agent to make sure you don’t miss anything. And, such a checkup can also give you peace of mind, leaving you free for your more literal spring cleaning and to enjoy the lovely weather!
